Abenaki School Liaison

Position Summary:

The position serves as a vital bridge between local schools and the Missisquoi Abenaki community. The individual in this role will promote understanding and respect for Abenaki culture and traditions, foster Indigenous knowledge among students and staff, and support Indigenous students through culturally grounded educational and social opportunities.

Employment Details:

Status: Part-Time (4 days per week), Some hours outside of the traditional school day hours

Work Locations: Rotating between elementary schools and the MVU office Reports To: Jeff Benay, Director of Indian Education

Key responsibilities:

• Serve as a liaison between schools and the Missisquoi Abenaki community.

• Attend faculty meetings and represent Indigenous perspectives when appropriate.

• Support students and staff in learning about Missisquoi and broader Indigenous cultures.

• Assist students and faculty with accessing Indigenous events, movements, and educational opportunities.

• Facilitate and support participation in initiatives such as Circle of Courage, Tribal Council, and PAC(Parent Advisory Committee).

• Help faculty become familiar with and effectively use the American Abenaki Curriculum.

• Support Indigenous students through small-group activities that foster belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity, and provide social-emotional support.

• Attend monthly PAC meetings to provide updates and maintain collaborative relationships with community partners.

Qualifications:

• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

• Familiarity with the Abenaki community, culture, and traditions.

• Willingness to learn and expand Indigenous knowledge.

• Creative and personable, with problem-solving abilities.

• Experience working with children and groups.

• Comfortable with public speaking and collaboration.

• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

• Willingness to work with programs such as Circle of Courage, Tribal Council, and PAC.
